They did. And in other parts of the world, as well. Very involved in the African slave trade. (See Brazil.) In fact, for a tiny country, they left their language in quite a few spots around the globe, too.
I have a friend who was born in Goa and came to the USA at 18. She is Catholic, and she has a common European first name.
