Time: Prosperity Preachers Helped Bring on Mortgage Mess
Oct 04

Paging John Avanzini

Robb Thompson

Jesse Duplantis and friends.

I have a word of knowledge I’d like to impart. God did NOT want your followers getting ridiculous mortgages they could not afford. All your lucky rubbing stones, holy Jordan River water, annointing oil, sacred hankerchiefs and rubbish you were mailing out to followers so their mortgages would get paid didn’t work.

Time Magazine reports

Foreclosures: Did God Want You to Get That Mortgage? - TIME

that followers of these shysters helped contribute to the current mortgage meltdown. What a surprise. Greed is not good.

I'm no fan of this uniquely American twisting of religion but I really think it's a stretch to actually blame preachers for the poor decisions made by the banking industry. It's very clear that a very large number of people received mortgages when they were not financially prepared to buy a house and the vast number of foreclosures in the last couple of years are the primary reason we're facing this bailout situation. This is not a religious problem, it's an economic problem, and I can't believe Time Magazine would publish something that distorts reality to such an extent.
