on BBC TV an interview with James Burke in which two American Scientists, when asked why manned missions to the moon were necessary,
they mentioned the "Thumper" experiments which placed 13 explosive charges on the moons surface, which would be difficult for robots to carry out.
I think theses were done during the Apollo 13 or 14 mission.
The seizemic result seemed to indicate that: "the moon was split at some point and joined together again".

After remaining in Arabia for few years the king returned to Malabar, but on the way he died at Shahar Muqalla in Yemen on Monday Ist Muharram in the first year of Hijrah sura 54 The hour drew nigh and the moon was rent in twain. And if they behold a portent they turn away and say: Prolonged illusion. (2)
They denied (the Truth) and followed their own lusts. Yet everything will come to a decision (3)
And surely there hath come unto them news whereof the purport should deter, (4)
Effective wisdom; but warnings avail not. (5)
So withdraw from them (O Muhammad) on the day when the Summoner summoneth unto a painful thing. (6)
With downcast eyes, they come forth from the graves as they were locusts spread abroad, (7)
Hastening toward the summoner; the disbelievers say: This is a hard day. (8)
