Why do people *need* spirituality in their lives?

I'd say its not for those who "need it".
Its only for those who "want it".
If you don't want it, you can't have it.

Or for people who think they 'need' it as some sort of 'requirement' (in re: religion) which essentially negates the point.

Why? Because human life is “nasty, brutish, and short.” People just can’t handle the idea that this one miserable life is all there is.

In addition, spirituality helps keep the masses in their “proper place” at the bottom of the socioeconomic food chain. The elites have a vested interest in promoting spirituality, so most societies have it.

Yep, which is why our emotional health (and cultivating a positive state of mind) is imperative, especially for those of us who do not believe in a god or a higher power. That said, it is necessary to feel compassion, awe, and acceptance as a whole (feelings associated with spirituality or a higher consciousness) for psychological well-being.

I agree. But this 'spiritual' compassion seems possible in all religions or none. Foe me, 'spirituality' comes in music, discovery, and..well, fun. I enjoy good humour and a laugh. Which is why it makes being here less of a grind than otherwise it might be.
