There is an idea in Christianity that humans are the "masters" of this world.

I find this idea to be illogical, wrong, and also destructive.

We humans are part of the world. We are a part of the system of things on this Earth. We are not the masters.

Lately, we have been living like the masters, and it is bringing this Earth to the brink of destruction. We need to drop this human-centric attitude and realise that we are simply one more type of being on this Earth.

When the environment really starts to break down, and when mankind must stop playing God. We will then realize that we are not masters of this Earth, we are just a species that must live in harmony with the earth, or else go extinct.

You sound like an American Indian. To bad we don't listen to them more often. To them, Earth is a mother. To Christians, Earth is something given to us to do with as we please.

Aside from intelligence, we're worse at almost everything than most animals.

I'm a Christian and where you got your information about humans being the master....it is just that person's or group's theory as it's not a Christian thing. Christ is the master. Not humans. Humans are to have dominon over the earth as in to care for it...and it seems we do a poor job at times.

Humans are definitely the dominant life-form on this planet. In that respect, yes we are the 'masters' because we have the power to destroy the world if we choose to make that mistake.

...Which doesn't say much for our alleged higher intelligence as a species, does it? It's not like we'd get a second chance.

It's not like we'd deserve one if we screwed it up that badly. As far as our higher intelligence, just remember that individual humans are pretty smart. It's when we band up in groups that we become stupid.

There's an old Native American saying; "We did not create the web of life, We are but one strand of that web, What we do to one affects all others". We are the only species of animals on this planet that has the capabilities to exterminate not only ourselves but all life, makes you wonder just how intelligent we really are.

This is why the dominant culture needs to be seen for what it is and it needs to be resisted.
People need to wake up to the truth of what those in power have done and continue to do ... before it's too late.
That bumper sticker that states, "Kill Your Television" isn't a joke.
Television programming (all mass media) keeps people hypnotized and mesmerized and, for the most part and with only a few exceptional choices, is meaningless, empty, vapid and totally lacking in anything redemptive.
People do not realize how brainwashed and manipulated they are and to what extent the power/war mongers are prevailing and will continue to prevail so long as people stay in this semi-conscious state of acceptance of a sick culture (kill your television!!! why wouldn't you?!!!) and a tragic scenario that is unfolding.
This material / consumer driven culture is reaching an end point.
It's an end game.
Accepting the status quo, at this point in history, is a dangerous thing to do.
The earth cannot sustain these old paradigms that the dominant culture depends on in order to sustain their trip(s).
Humans have botched things up to such an extent that it's difficult to see how, at this point, we can turn around and head in different more harmonious, creative, loving and cooperative direction.
If this doesn't happen, it's not looking good.
And i cannot see how positive change can happen without a strong connection with and love and respect for the earth .... for nature ... all of it.
People are so alienated / disconnected from nature ... from their own nature and from the earth and cosmos and this disconnect leaves an individual imbalanced, fragmented, lost and powerless and more susceptible to influences that are antithetical to the process of realizing ourselves as human beings and helping others to do the same.
Radical = root.
If we don't get real radical, real fast, will there even be a 7th generation?
And if so, what kind of messed up place will they inherit?

"The truly wise person kneels at the feet of all creatures and is not afraid to endure the mockery of others."
-Mechthild of Magdeburg-
(German mystic, poet and Beguine.)

"Our unwillingness to face the extremity of the situation that confronts the entire human race is part of the problem. We are certainly at the end of a civilization, the end of a whole cycle of history. The facts of our global crisis - a crisis that is at once political and economic, psychological and environmental - show us clearly that the human race has no hope of survival unless it chooses to undergo a total change of heart, a massive, quite unprecedented spiritual transformation. Only the leap into a new consciousness can engender the vision, moral passion, joy and energy necessary to save the planet in the time we have. The message we are being sent by history can be summed up in four words : transform or die out. Many experts agree that we have, at the most, fifteen or twenty years left before extreme crisis becomes unalterable catastrophe. Human survival depends on whether we are brave enough to face the full desolation of what we have done to our psyches and the planet, and wise and humble enough to turn to the Divine inside and outside us to learn what we will need to go forward.

Bede Griffiths, just before he died, said, "The hour of God and mankind's greatest ordeal is now here. Everything depends on whether we can abandon our pride before it is too late.'"
-Andrew Harvey-

"Many stories have been heard that the sun will got out, the world will come to an end.
But if we all act well and think well it will not end.
That is why we are still looking after the sun and the moon and the land."
-The Kogis-

Humans are anything but masterful when a bridge collapses under them over a gorge, or an ebola germ takes up residence inside the body. Humans shake and cower in the face of a hurricane. Where is the "master" aspect in that ?
