A bunch of my friends recently got kicked out of their youth group because the man in charge believes role play games are evil and the devil's work...

Let me clarify because people have stared at me funny before

A game based on the generic universal role play system which employs maps, character sheets, dice, and the imagination of those involved as the leader of the group spins a story for the rest to participate in...sort of like co-writing an adventure except with math involved.

The game they happened to be playing was set in outer space, nothing about demons, satanic messages, what have you.

So my question is where in the bible does Jesus say

And thou shalt not role ten sided dice or set a date to meet that you might exercise thine's imagination for doing so is an abomination in the eyes of my father.

Or something similar?

I sought search engines out for some form of an answer but only found a deranged canadian's hate site for video games, role play games, Harry Potter, and more and got in trouble for the many pornographic pictures littered on this self proclaimed Christian site.

So I ask you.

There are no verses in the Bible about ten sided dice.

While I don't think that there's much positive that comes from a lot of those games and personally I wouldn't want/allow my kids to play them, I also wouldn't kick kids out of my youth group for doing it.

If I might explain a bit further, I believe that anything we give access to our minds that isn't healthy can lead us down a path that isn't glorifying to God.

Basically, garbage in-garbage out.

I do lead a church youth group and while I caution the kids about the trash that they tell me they watch, listen to, and play(video games), those are the very kids that I try the hardest to reach.

Can't reach them if they aren't there.

So, in a way, while I can see their leaders position, I'm totally opposed to it.

What's the name of the game they play? Maybe I should try and get some info on it and see if there's a specific element that their leader may be picking up on.

Also, were they playing this game at church or during youth functions, because that would make me take action.

Before class ever starts. You can come at six, but it doesn't start till seven. They were playing in the cafe' bit of it. We move to another room when service starts.

GURPS Generic Universal Role Play System

Are you opposed to writers, poets, philosophers, and allowing your kids to play pretend games as well by any chance because that's all they were doing exercising their creativity.

While I agree with you on the television bit, I love writing and video games it keeps me sane.

It was before service we always get there early to hang out the pastor set up tables and couches for us to do that. They always put it up prior to going to the service and the pastor before saw it as harmless.

I would have asked them not to play but, more importantly, I would have scratched whatever else was planned for the night and taught them why it may be something that was dangerous.

It's not 'just' the game, virote. It's the principle and reasoning and where you have to go mentally to play it. It's just something as a church leader that would be irresponsible not to address from a spiritual standpoint. If anything, your friends should respect the wishes of the leader. Were they asked before they were kicked out?

On this same vein, I have youth that tell me they want to know God exists, want God to speak to them, want to learn what God wants for their lives...then they tell me how much they enjoyed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the art element. I say "Huh?"

That's like coming to me with a bag of chips, a 2 liter Pepsi, and a sack of honey roasted peanuts and telling me that you can't figure out why you're not losing weight.

As leaders in the church, some of the decisions necesssary aren't easy and sure aren't popular. But we answer to God first. I doubt you're friends wouldn't be allowed to return if they came back with a humble spirit and respect the rules.

lol, my friends and I played a role playing game at recess for a little while in fifth grade. It was a dungeons and dragons type game that my friend made up. There were demons involved, but the goal was to kill them, they were really hard because you had to roll two 20 sided dice. lol, we also built an "empire" of which I was voted in as king for a whole 20 weeks, it was a voluntary kingdom so at the times when there were less people showing up each day we role played, but we generally had a good outcome because people wanted to trade their snacks and we ran the only organized snack market. I don't recall anything bad happening, my friend who made and ran the game killed off a friend who played that he didn't really like though, but he felt bad and let him exist as a ghost which turned out as a disadvantage to us because he could fly through us and take away some of our health points.

lol, role playing games are just a bunch of childing nonsense. Saying that they are of the devil is like saying that playing hop-scotch is morse code to satan. Although I did stay back when somebody brought a weegi board (or however you spell it) I was told to avoid it like the plague and it didn't look all that fun anyways

Some writers, poets, and philosophers I would be opposed to letting my kids play.

But I do allow them to play games.

They are huge Star Wars fans and sometimes I even think that may be a problem.

But that's in my home with me there and I'm only exposing my kids....the scenario you laid out is in church with other kids around.

But more importantly, an authority figure made a request and/or rule and you guys(or gals) should follow it. Whether you agree or not, they should respect the decision.
