I have nothing against Atheism in and of it's self ( the rapid, vocal foaming at the mouth Anti-Theism of some people is another story...) and hate fundamentalism just as much as any Libertarian, but this is absurd and it makes Atheism look bad. I mean, instead of trading the Bible and the Quaran for porn, why not offer them free science text books or a book by Michael Shermer or Carl Sagan or something?

I mean, if I was an Atheist I would be out right embarassed by this because now people are going to read this and be like "ohh, Atheist are people who hand out porn." It really makes their message tarnished and makes the religious right look good.

Don't get me wrong, they have the fundamental right to go ahead and do it, but that doesn't mean it isn't a lame-brain thing to do.

Still, I wonder if I would get a copy of Hustler if I traded in this...

I beat you to this post several days ago, and it was quickly removed. I assume because someone got all offended over the thought of bibles being disposed of or something. My bet is that this one will go bye bye too as soon as some fundy makes a complaint.

Handing out a book by Michael Shermer wouldn't generate the amount of publicity this has. I'm assuming the reason for doing something that's outrageous in the eyes of many is for the attention. To quote one of our not-so-beloved presidents: Mission accomplished!

I'm not embarrassed by this. People are gonna think bad things about atheist anyways. Kudos to these kids for believing what they do and not giving a damn what anyone thinks.

You just read the title of that book and not actually any details on it, didn't you? It is a Christian apologetics book written with a goal of converting atheists to Christians. Its like Ray Comfort's "Atheist Central" blog, it has nothing to do with atheists and everything to do with Christians rehashing their tired old arguments over why we shouldn't be atheists.

I'm laughing too, though I highly doubt whoever is doing it really represents anything but a tiny minority of atheists.

I think it's a good representation of what atheists generally really feel about their atheism vis a vis religion, i.e. it is not something serious with dire consequences, but rather something to use as a reason for fighting. Either that, or it demonstrates their lack of social skills resulting in the inability to realize that such attacks are only offensive and not a way to seriously interact with others. It could be just that one group, but we'll see what the posts here say about the social skills and/or genuineness of atheists here...

Why in the hell would any atheist view religion as something serious with dire consequences?

You know, after arguing with you on the NJ boards, I am suprised to say that I agree with you 100% for the most part.

However, I would say that there is a difference between plain old Atheist people who just don't believe in divinity or follow any religion, which I am fine with, and the rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth anti-theist who are not content enough to say "I just don't follow any religion and don't believe it" but instead feel some urge to shout their belief in a lack of a God at the top of their lungs and declare that there 100% is no God (just as unprovable a position as the most literalists religious fundamentalist) and that anyone who believes there is a God is a raving lunatic and an idiot.

Anti-Theistic Dawkin's Witnesses make the majority of Atheist look bad. As Einstein once said:

"I have repeatedly said that in my opinion the idea of a personal God is a childlike one. You may call me an agnostic, but I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth."

Still, there is something to be said about a lack of social skills. Handing out free porn and the negative attention it creates is not helping their cause one bit.

If it was anything like my college, it is probably a direct reaction to the fire-and-brimstone street preachers that used to come on campus and scream at everyone as they walked to class.

It's a college campus; probably the most appropriate place to stretch those legs and learn about these things. They aren't writing policy like some of the Religious Right.
