This is backwards from your analogy to mathematical symbols. We see objects, and label their properties with symbols. If the analogy fit, we would see God, and label its properties as our consciousness. But that's not what happens, so the analogy fails. Consciousness is more like another "object" (or an object's properties) for us to symbolize with language rather than a symbol itself.
