Sales Tax Rate - Washoe County (Reno: for sale, vs, shop)

Hey All:

So I was vacationing in the Reno area these past couple of days and did some shopping. After looking over my receipts, I saw that a store I bought from at The Summit broke down the sales tax as follows: State: 6.25% Washoe County: 3.125% District 0.500% = Total: 9.875% WTF?!! Has it really become this much? I mean, it's been awhile since I've been back to Reno and I remember when it was around 7%. But at nearly 10%, damn.

That breakdown doesn't sound correct. Washoe county is 7.725 according to the Nevada Department of Taxation.

That is weird because its too high - check the math on the receipt, I am curious if it really was that high

Thanks for your replies... I double-checked my receipt and the math; surely enough, I was indeed charged 9.875% for sales tax.

Sounds to me like you got ripped off. I think Nevada Department of Taxation information is likely correct.

Yea, as do I. I found the Sales Tax Map from the state, and really believe that it's only 7.725% Oh well, it was only a couple of dollars extra...not that big of a deal to me.

You should report that business. They are committing an act of fraud and ripping off all of their customers for who knows how long.

Or at least let us all know who what business so we can avoid them.

Could you post a picture or scan of the receipt? I write point of sale software and some of the guys here are interested in this breakdown and the issue in general. Sometimes it can be easy to misconfigure sales tax data, however that's usually in states with weird tax brackets and special taxes to certain types of items.

I have a tax question. I purchased a item at a walmart tha had higher tax then the walmart I returned the item and Walmart Customer Service told me that they can not give me the full tax amount back only what there tax is. The product was a few hours old had receipt box etc.

Is this true if you go to a box retailer and if you return a item with a receipt they can only refund yu there tax % and not the percentaage that was charge for a lager amount. But the odd thing the lady told me if it was the other way around meaning less vs more tax they will only give you the lesser amount even if its less then their area.

i did not have time to debate or get a supervisor I had to go but I like to know if this is legit. thanks

The government doesn't care one way or another, as long as they get their cut. I can find no further information on the suit, and nobody here knows if there are any laws covering this specifically.
