Hilton has sold both their Reno and their Las Vegas properties in the last four years.

The GSR is a lot nicer than when it was the Reno Hilton five years ago.

Thank you for the correction. I had bid on a construction project some years back in Stockton, CA where Hilton owned it, but wouldn't put their name on it until the remodel was complete. I assumed GSR was a similar situation.

It should also be mentioned that the 2 highest per capita income zip codes are in Northern Nevada. Incline Village, and Verdi is very expensive, so don't brag up Vegas that much. Higher crime rates in Clark county comes with the largest population in the state to.
The Sahara was purchased and renovated to become SLS Las Vegas.

Interesting, we haven't stayed there for some time now. I used to go there a lot for work, and my wife would come in on Thursday and we would stay the weekend. I don't gamble, so I don't know if there's a difference, but our trips to Reno staying at Harrah's were always nice. Now that I live here I go downtown rarely except maybe to a movie. We did a buffet for my wife giving blood platelets at the Atlantis and it seemed very nice. I don't know where others stayed that have brought these complaints, but what I see in Reno is no different than my stay in Vegas.

Lived in NorCal most of my life (50 years) and visited Reno and South Lake Tahoe often. Reno used to be more upscale and had much more gambling than SLT, but indian casinos have stolen both of their thunder. Reno USED to be much better paying than SLT. Now both of them are pretty tight payout-wise. I really barely even gamble in SLT anymore because the slots are so tight, and the cocktail waitstaff are few and slow. Playing the bar top poker machines is great if you want a lot of free drinks. Make sure you put at least $20-40 dollars in, and tip on your first round, or you will pay for those drinks.

Comparing Reno to Vegas is like comparing an old catfish to a mako shark. They are both fish, but not even swimming in the same pond! Reno is a bit tatty and tired, and trying to hang on. It has its great moments (Hot August Nights!) but can't measure up to all the glamour, lights, shows, attractions, etc of Vegas. Now if you ski, or are into spending time at Lake Tahoe, then it's fine. It's just not anything like Vegas.

It depends on what you are looking for in a vacation.

I agree LV is more a casino paradise, but Northern Nevada is more well-rounded as a tourist destination. Northern Nevada is also a WAYYYY better lifestyle for residents imo, wayyy better quality of life than LV.

Northern Nevada is definitely a better place to enjoy outdoor adventures in the Sierra, around Lake Tahoe and at the desert lakes and open spaces. Mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, skiing, Lake Tahoe beaches etc...also Northern Nevada has some amazing history with the mining towns of Virginia City, Silver City to visit and the historical district in Carson City and some great history along the South Shore at Lake Tahoe in the Pope Beach area, etc....

I am not a casino person, but there are plenty of nice casino's in Reno and Lake Tahoe/Incline and plenty of shows. So again it depends on what you are looking for in a vacation or lifestyle.

This is a 6-year-old thread, folks. Things have changed in both cities. The one thing all the casinos have in common today is that they're all closed.
