I am moving this with a family member next week in a Uhaul. Are there less weigh stations on the route using 80 or on the route using 395? We are trying to figure out the route with the least amount of weigh stations so we can get to LA quickly.

Thanks

Do you meet one of the following criteria for who must stop for the weigh station? And California only requires commercial vehicles to weigh as far as I know.

The following vehicles must stop: (1) agricultural; (2) passenger or specialty vehicles either in combination (towing a trailer) with GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or more; and, (3) commercial trucks with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or more.

Also NV weigh stations tend to be closed most of the time unless they're running a "sting." Of course coming over on I80 you will have to go through the bug station.

A Mid size U Haul isn't required to stop? When I was in San Diego and in one, we were required to stop.

I just called up the weigh station in Truckee. You still have to go through the weigh station there.

I'm not entirely sure that avoiding weigh stations will = getting to LA quicker. 395 is much less traveled, probably over all less weigh stations but it's also got some sections that are pretty hilly and curvy which will certainly slow you down.

California Weigh Station & DOT Information

Most of them can be avoided by simply exiting at the last exit before the station, then reentering at the next entrance after. Use Google Maps to figure it out.

I wouldn't recommend doing that, not sure what the fines are however I wouldn't be surprised if they were looking for that.

It's not illegal to exit the highway and use an alternative route. Truck drivers do it all the time. It is illegal to bypass the weigh station, if the signs tell you to stop. Though a lot of people do that too, and probably only a small number get stopped for it.
