Reno is flatland. Mountains/Hills are only viewable from afar.

Try Susanville if the Reno area doesn't cut muster. Much lower COLA

For an introvert, a job at the Border Patrol would work great. It's about 45 min to Susanville from the Reno/Ca state line

at Hallelujah Junction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallel...on,_California

They are hiring quite often

You really don't know about Reno.

The Northern and Western areas within Reno city limits are very hilly and beautiful.

Try Susanville if you want to be around correctional officers

Moved to Abq 11 years ago from SoCal, late 40's then, knew a few friends here, visited a few times, liked the smaller city and mountains, sold out of CA and moved to safe foothills area outside of Abq on way to Santa Fe. The mountain backdrop is gorgeous and we love the area, but now almost a dozen years later will be looking to move on in next year or two. Abq as a city is mostly depressing, dull and the crime sucks. Too isolated, 7 hours to Denver or Phoenix and nothing in between. If you want to be a student of hispanic and native american culture you will love it; have visited them all and need new experiences, so about ready to move on. I couldn't imagine being in my 20's and living in Abq. NorCal is first choice, but taxes come into consideration. Checking out Reno, because as you said almost identical climate and seasons. The proximity to Tahoe, the ocean, SF, Sacramento (which is California gem), wine country of Sonoma and Napa, Oregon all within a 2-4 hour drive is so appealing. Reno housing isn't cheap, but you will get what you pay for. If you want cheap the the South may beckon, ugh.

We moved to Reno as 20-somethings quite a few years ago when housing was a bit cheaper. Now our daughter is a 20-something, just back from grad school, and living in Reno. Even in a desirable field like IT I would not come here without a job. Try to get the hiring company to help with the cost of the move or at least a signing bonus. Apartments are crazy expensive with waiting lists. The social scene is not easy for a young single in Reno. There are plenty of things to do but it is not easy to meet people here. Hopefully you would find like minded and educated friends through your job.

On the plus side, you will never run out of things to do. This weekend for instance...Reno Rodeo (it's a thing, even if you've never been to one put on your best cowboy look and enjoy!), Lavender and Honey Festival, Adventure Sports, Aces baseball games (ironically vs. ABQ this week!), soccer, Food Truck Friday...just to name a few. Every weekend is like this in Reno for the most part. It is rare to cancel anything due to weather in the summer. We have a little rainy season in the spring and fall, and of course some snow in the winter. But it is nothing like Back East.

Reno is a great place to live but I would have a job. Rents and housing prices have skyrocketed. Lots of great outdoor recreation plus tons of stuff to do all the time.

Hands down Reno is nicer than Albuquerque. You can see the rolling hills from nearly everywhere in the city and the Sierras to the west are majestic, and still gobs of snow on them in July! We have been looking at housing market in Reno this week, average prices are about 50% higher. There are square miles of very nice neighborhoods in Reno, clean shopping centers, and even though the casino section of downtown is somewhat tired, the riverwalk area on the Truckee is fantastic.

Have been doing more homework on Reno and Washoe County. One thing thats a plus for parts of NM are fairly low property taxes, especially in Sandoval County where we live. Reading about Washoe County whopping Property Tax increase proposal, Think its bill SJR14. Anyone have any up to date details about this? Massive property tax increases going forward would certainly be a deal killer for us buying a home in Reno.

People here hate taxes so I doubt it will happen. The tax rate is also based on the age of your house. So our house is worth 340 yet our taxes are only 700/year. If it was a new house we would pay much more.
