I'm considering Dayton, NV as a place to retire. Any thoughts or info about the area. I am familiar with the Reno area but not Dayton. Thanks!

Dayton is nice, not much infrastructure....one major grocery store, depending on how far out you go on Hwy 50 it's a short commute into Carson City for all your shopping and medical needs (about 15-20 minutes from Dayton proper). The highway into Carson is two lanes in each direction and well maintained. Highway 50 is now a split two lanes in each direction all the way to Lahontan. This is a big safety and convenience improvement.

Dayton has milder weather compared to Carson City or Reno and Minden, as it's not up against the Sierra's...less wind and snow and snow melts quickly usually. It can be hotter in the summertime. I have not heard of too many issues with the water table or wells drying up, but I could be wrong about some areas.

Everyone that I know that lives out there is happy. Many Carson City residents moved to Dayton because Carson City is mostly built out, but Dayton is building alot of nice homes. Definitely a retiree haven in many ways, but good to raise a family as well. It is more affordable than another big retiree area, which is Minden/Garderville and the rural areas around them. Dayton real estate is appreciating at a shocking rate. It looks like the comps are on par with similar properties in Carson City now, but becomes more affordable the farther east you go.

Carson River runs through it, alot of jeep trails and places to go explore in the mountains all around and a very nice high level golf course with nice homes around it. Rural properties might have regular wild horse herd neighbors.

Some people have complained about the lack of CCR type of laws...if your not in a subdivision...it's a live and let live type of area.

I do disagree with this part. The western part of Dayton seems to be less windy, but going further east where the canyon opens up it can be quite windy.

Yes, some of the worst wind I have experienced out that way is camping at Lake Lahontan. OMG...it's like a devil's triangle of wind there, it comes from across the lake and turns into a hurricane type of environment with blowing sand...but even if you move to the other side the wind blows across the other way and gob smacks you over there, too...maybe it's Lahaunting Lake. It gets those squalls sometimes....

But I do love camping out there on the beach in the off season right on the water, cottonwood trees, sand, waves and blissful quiet....

Not as good as Genoa, but better than Silver Springs.

Silver Springs has got some nice properties on larger acreage. Up on the hillside, gorgeous views of Lahontan with Fernley, Fallon and Yerington nearby for essentials. It’s growing and the new freeway lanes to Carson are a game changer. That whole area is going to explode in development, it’s in the local news. The ‘loop’ from Carson to Silver Springs to Fernley and back to Reno.

Grocery Outlet opening soon. Hope it puts a kink in that damn Smith's shorts and gets them to clean up their act. That place drives me near homicidal.

Why do you say that? I'm not a fan either, just curious what you have to say.

At least you have Carson City to do most of your shopping without not being too far out and tied up in traffic and congestion. You have two Costco's in Carson?. Dayton sounds ideal in that you aren't in an overpopulated area but have access to medical, dental and most services a retiree might need.
Fernley a bit further away for newer homes and subdivisions if you can deal with living real close to neighbors.

There is one Costco in Carson City (south end of town), one in Reno, one in Sparks.
