Ask for a short-term or month-to-month lease.

Assume you'll hate the place and end up moving, because that's what will probably happen. Pls trust me. Even if you have to pay twice the going rate for a month-to-month or three month lease, at least you can get out of it.

You can put your stuff in storage for the first month or two.

I sincerely hope you meet the Landlord BEFORE in person , view the property , and make sure the key works BEFORE you give him 10 cents in deposits, rent , security and so forth.

There are cases where the person showing you the rental is NOT the owner of the property, he collects all your deposits ( and 10 other peoples ) and skips town. He never owned the property at all...

Then other cases still where someone cuts and pastes someones ad. places it themselves, tells you they are in Jamaica at the moment and to just please send all the deposits , worse yet through Western Union.

Spend weeks , if you have the time, to scope out real LL's from scammers.

True story, it happens a lot. It's a MAJOR scam on craigslist.
