it's been over 50 days since i left the apartment.

i still have not received my security deposit back from my landlord.

i rented from an individual.

what is an appropriate letter i can send asking for my security deposit back?

Tile a claim in small claims court. Did you get any documentation from the LL regarding the deposit? Did you leave a forwarding address? Do you have proof you left a forwarding address? Those things are key in a small claims court. Don't bother with any more letters if you have attempted contact before.

Yes, he has my forwarding address. He sent me an email like 3 weeks ago saying he was going to send me my security deposit. Haven't received anything though.

be sure to keep all his respond, incase you have to go to a small claim.

Google your states Landlord/Tenant laws, follow the guidelines, it may require a certified letter of request before small claims can be filed and save your email correspondance.
Most states have a penality for LLs who are not in compliance with state law (anywhere from 15-30 days depending on your state) and the return will be above the original SD.
