Yes. If you rented a room to them and they're paying rent to you then they're YOUR tenants. Go to the first "sticky" on this page and read your state landlord tenant laws as they pertain to how much notice you have to give them based on whether they pay rent weekly or monthly. Give them written notice to leave and, if they don't leave, then follow the steps laid out to evict them. Proper notice to leave comes first, eviction is the last resort.

Can i add also in another context (not OP's) that an occupant is also described as someone whose lease has ended as per the LL notice?

Nope. They're still a tenant.
A "tenant holding over" perhaps if in conflict... but still "the tenant"

So in my case if my attorney sent a 30 day notice to quit to a tenant at will.

Doesn't the tenant become an occupant upon receipt of the notice?

Because the notice says that any money received after receipt of this notice will be for occupancy only.

I guess thats my confusion.

This attorney you hired...
do they do LL:Tenant issues as a regular part of their practice?
Ideally, that RE is the primary focus?

If so, they should be doing things correctly per local law/process.
They should also be able to answer your questions as required...
and often to have prepared FAQ like documents describing the legal process.

They should also be willing to have you "sit on their shoulder" as things progress.
This opportunity to witness the process and learn first hand the HOW and the WHAT
is as much a reason to hire them as achieving the end result.

My friend is living with a, now ex, friend of hers and the ex friend is the lease holder and moved out on her 2 days before rent is due for the last remaining month of their lease basically screwing her over and now she has to find a way to come up with all of the rent. What can she do in order to get her ex friends half of the lease?

I am in the state of PA.

Currently googling answers but would love if someone had a quick reply for me.
Thanks!

Occupant - person who lives in the unit but it's not financially responsible
Lease holder- person who lives in the unit and IS financially responsible.
