Hi,
I'm just curious.
I'm a renter and gave a check to my landlords on the first of the month and they still haven't cashed it. It's the 15th today.
Is it appropriate for me, at some point, to give them a call and ask them about it.
It's kinda no big deal but an un-cashed check is annoying if it goes on too long.
Thanks.

You might want to call and politely ask if they got it, or if you know they did, is there a problem with it. Kind of starnge. I cash mine within 2 or 3 days.

I would call them. I usually deposit mine within 2-3 days also.

Thank you for the responses.
I'll wait one more day and then politely inquire.

My tenant always complains about me holding her checks for weeks because she doesn't balance her checkbook. It's not like I am some professional landlord, I just own a double flat and rent one out, live in the other. I probably would be better about it but she never pays on time or in full and sometimes for one month she'll give me 2 or 3 checks, if she thinks I'm running to the bank 3 times a month for her she's insane!

Just bring it up to them and simply ask if there is a problem.

One of my tenants loves money orders, the other personal checks. We cash both within a few days of receipt. Maybe if your LL will accept money orders it will solve the problem, but call em' up and inquire when they plan on cashing the check in question. Your issue is why I don't like to write personal checks - you've got little control over how long your account will be tied up. One last thought: Before I became a LL and was still a tenant, my LL require me to set up an allotment to his personal bank account. That way he didn't have to deal with the paperwork end of the business.

I would do it in writing so you will have proof later on...perhaps a quick email.

I am a Landlord. Yes, I would give the LL a call and tell them you noticed your rent check has not cleared yet and you wanted to make sure they got it or it wasn't misplaced or something. You might mention it makes your budgeting easier if they can cash it a little sooner.

Some LL's are complacent and just don't get around to doing stuff. You are obviously a good tenant and they assume the money will be there in two weeks. Even though it's a little disconcerting to have your account off kilter, I'd say your LL is giving you about the highest compliment you can get as a tenant - his trust.

When I rented I mailed my rent checks. I used to send them around the 15th, so that they would clear before the 1st. I didn't want my rent to be late because we were paying way, way under market. A couple of times my check didn't clear before the 30th so I'd call the LL to make sure he got it.

Email the landlord. I deposit rent checks the day after they are due; either on the 2nd or on the 16th.
