I have been living in my house since mid April when I looked at the house I noticed a few things weren't done and I also mentioned the fact that there was only one door and according to Fire Code there needs to be 2 doors, also fire alarms were not installed (we did that), some of the windows are painted shut or excess spray from them painting is on them, and also some of them are broke. We pay a lot of money for our house and when I mentioned the door the first time he didn't say anything and I assumed that they were going to put another door to meet code. However I mentioned this to my landlord and was told that he is not putting another door to my house because it will not generate enough revenue for him. I do not feel safe in my house now and would love to terminate my lease and get my security deposit back so I can move somewhere where I do feel safe and it is legal. Can I do this and how?
I've rented small houses and apartments over the years with only one door, and it never made me feel unsafe? If it's a big house, then yes, a second door would be nice, in case of a fire or other emergency - but as long as you can crawl out a window, you have a way to get out.
If the windows are painted shut, that is something the landlord should fix. Have you asked him? I don't blame him for not wanting to install a second door, but functioning windows isn't too much to ask.

If your fire code dictates two means of egress (or doors, depending on the wording), and you only have one, it doesn't really matter what he feels about revenue, he needs to get it up to code.
You can report him to your code enforcement, and he can't kick you out, but be prepared for a poor relationship and your lease not being renewed when its up.
Make positive that you're reading the code properly before you go that route.
"Mentioning" and "assuming" won't get you very far legally when it comes to breaking your lease agreement. You need to put your concerns in writing to the LL and read up on what your state landlord tenant laws say about time frames for addressing maintenance issues. And as noted, make sure you're absolutely correct about the door issue. Good luck.
The "door" issue does not sound correct. I have apartments big and small, some have one door, some two. There is in all of them more than one way to get out in an emergency. Windows work as well as doors in a fire. Check that out before you create a problem you cannot take back.
The "broken" windows needs to be better defined. Broken how? Broken glass, broken mechanism....what is broken?
Hi I am renting from a slumlord come to find out.......
The gas company came out and redtagged the furnese, dryer, and the left side of the stove also the air conditioner does not workand 25% of the house electrical does not work..and I had the hvac guy look at the ac unit and he said the furnese is the wrong one and should not be there that it is a fire hazard ......I have mentioned all this to the landlord several times with no responce except for an evection notice.....I have 5 kids and he knows this and still doesn't care.......what do I do I have nowhere else to go
Breynolds is living in Hemet, CA, according to zipcode in her profile. You need to get in touch with legal aid and they will advise you. Note that the landlord (in most cases) cannot evict you because he is not fixing things in the apt. However, you really should not stay there as it sounds incredibly unsafe. Please contact legal aid. Go to the courthouse if you can't find legal aid. Go to a local church even. Ask for help locally.
