Going to be moving soon, to a house that's about 10 miles from where I currently live. I am willing to pack but don't want to do the lifting and moving. From your personal experiences, whats the cheapest way to get this done?

Hire a local moving company with a good rep. Here, I used "Starving Students Movers" to unload the truck I had some necessary stuff in before the national movers got here with all the rest. They charged a flat rate, which included a minimum. We didn't go over the minimum and I was happy with the price.

Remember you get what you pay for. Be careful of movers who give you an estimate based on # of boxes and pieces of furniture. Make sure you use a licensed company and you will be safe and satisfied. Cheap is not a good way to go, inexpensive is better.

I have quite a bit of experience with this. Some good, some bad.

What you want a licensed mover that will give you a FLAT DAY RATE.

That way, no matter how long they take, you know what you are paying.

If you do end up going with an hourly rate, YOU MUST SCHEDULE IT FIRST THING IN MORNING. Or risk paying for several exhausted movers that will move at a snail's pace and take breaks every 15 minutes. Because yours is the 4th move they are doing that day.

It is very easy to get ripped off with movers, its happened to us before.

So to review..

FLAT-RATE (including gas) + TIP

Hourly (schedule first thing in the morning)

You may also want to look for a local church that arranges move-days. You'll end up paying about the same, except it counts as charity and you can deduct it off taxes.

The cheapest way to go is to rent a U-Haul van for $39 a day plus $.79 a mile extra. Then find a team of two or four guys to help you move the boxed and furniture. You may be able to advertise in Craig's list, or you may be able to find a local handy person contractor guy who can find people to help you. Contact the broker in charge of most agencies, they will know someone who will know where to find strong guys.

The most expensive is the moving company who will proably charge you some where from $1000-$2000 to do this. Since I just got such a quote, it was $120 for the truck, $23 for the gas for the truck, and $120 per hour or parts there of for a four man crew. I'm hiring them for a long distance move, but since my renters won't get out of my house, I'm going to have to move my stuff left in my house into another storage unit with the stuff I already took out to make the house look empty---by my settlement day. For that I will use the U-haul. The moving company suggested this.
