I'm a brand new apt hunter who will (hopefully) be gettig my very 1st apt soon. Of the list of many important things to do, I also plan to call the police station to find out the crime rates of the apt complexes I'm intereseted in. Do any of you do this?
I've asked the complexes their crime rates & they say they can't say, but they tell me to go ahead & call the police station if I want.
I have even gone so far as to ask the question of the police...imagine that I am your daughter and I have your granddaughter - would you want us to rent from xyz place. You would be surprised how much more in detail the officer will go if you put the question to them.
To the best of my knowledge most police departments do not keep the data on crimes stored in a fashion that is easily retrievable by apartment complex, nor do they have the personnel available to answer these kinds of questions. If you are fortunate enough to live in an area which tracks crimes on a GIS data base you may be able to look it up on their website, but no tall municipalities do this.
A few places you can check:
Your local police station website, look for a GIS crime tracking feature.

You know, we (accidentally) spoke with a local bank teller about an apartment building we were looking at, turned out to be pretty good advice! She knew someone who lived there, and wasn't too crazy about the experience.
Our apt complex was easy enough to figure out... the cops hang out in the empty parking lots behind it when they have down time. Not because it's dangerous, but because it's quiet.
I've called the police before considering a move into an area; they are usually quite helpful.
