When my roommate and I moved into our furnished student apartment (not university affiliated, btw) we were given brand-new mattresses. 2 years later we moved out, and she was hit with a $200 charge for damage to her mattress. They said it was stained, she says it wasn't, but we weren't able to do a walk-through to prove anything with the property management company because we had a third deadbeat roommate who refused to move out, and they will not do a walk-through until everyone has moved out. We have separate leases and are not responsible for deadbeat roommate, fortunately.
My question is, were they really planning on reusing that mattress for someone else? Are landlords allowed to give people used mattresses? That seems unsanitary. Was the $200 charge justified? We are in TN. The lease doesn't address the issue as far as I can tell.
I do know thousands of people sleep on used mattresses every night in the Hotels across the country...
Don't quote me... the local goodwill does sell reconditioned mattresses that have been sanitized and have a tag attached... they will not accept any mattress that is stained as a donation.
Considering I paid 4K for my mattress set, I think $200 is a steal....tell your friend to cut her losses and move on.
