It's an apartment building but yes the kitchen is above my bedroom with noisy hardwood floors and a dishwasher I can hear (which she likes that she likes to start running at 11-12 at night.) The worst part is her bedroom(s) are two floors above me so if she just went to bed at a reasonable hour it would be a non-issue.

The building is from the 50's or 60's and I'm guessing noise wasn't a big consideration when the place was constructed.

You can complain about the dishwasher running that late at night, but as for her being up and moving about her unit...not so much....you can't dictate her bedtime.

Top floor doesn't always mean quiet either...you can hear people from below and beside you if they're loud enough......apartments/condos are never, ever going to be perfectly quiet...it is what it is.

I am starting to learn this the hard way....my problem was I was spoiled..I lived in a top floor apartment for almost eight years with a very considerate downstairs neighbor, and it was sooo quiet.

I agree, my old next door neighbors were noisy but luckily they moved. It's just the odds are much better if there's nobody above you. TV noise comes down through floor easier than it goes up. And obviously you're not going to hear people walking around below you unless they're obscenely loud. My last two apartments were on the top floor and in 8 years (and many different neighbors) I never had any significant noise complaints. Some of it also comes down to layout and construction of the units as well. My current building is not only old but is designed to cram as many units as possible into the lot which means more common walls being shared with neighbors.

That’s not the solution, by law all upper level apartment/condo are required to have carpeting on 90percent of each room and the squeaking comes from wood floors that have been improperly installed, I going through the same not only squeaking, jumping, heel walking it very annoying, very intolerable, remember we all deserve (quiet and peaceful enjoyment especially if you’re living in md or dc, the cost are outrageous so NO,,I’m going to just get use to it

What law? Please cite said law. Thanks

Peaceful enjoyment doesn’t mean you won’t hear people walk or run water or other daily noises. It applies to loud ladies, blaring music, fighting etc.

There are few condo associations that require carpeting upstairs. I don't think carpeting is required even in the most unreasonable rent control cities.

Quiet enjoyment has nothing to do with guaranteeing that you be surrounded by silence. On the other hand, nobody really cares if you refuse to adapt. It's your problem and no one is going to shoulder that burdon for you. You've heard the expression, cantstandthenoise, "not my circus, not my monkeys"?

I went through this in a condo, several years back. It drove me nuts...the people upstairs had carpeting too. I seriously think the ceilings/floors must have been made of tissue paper.

Thank God I broke the lease and got out of there. NIGHTMARE!

Living in a concrete building now. While I don't hear much, I still do hear stuff. Bottom line is, when you share walls/ceilings, you will hear stuff. Just the level of how much can vary greatly.
