I don't think all of that will be required for me since I'm not renting a LOFT and just a studio
The type of space makes no difference.
Other than your concerns about discrimination, you've hinted at possible credit issues several times. If there is an issue, than it's best just to acknowledge it and ask how to deal with it. If it's something to do with your credit reports or scores, then CreditBoards is an excellent resource--the forums are free, btw.

yes, it will all be required.....it's generally required of all good landlords. I'd be concerned if my landlord was only looking at income...I dont' want rif raf living next to me.
And what the hell does a loft have to do with anything?
How long to process? A minimum of 2 hours, plus the drive to the county offices, add a couple more hours. So, if everything goes perfectly, I can screen 1 person in 4 hours.
Sometimes I can reject in just a few minutes, if there are lies on the application.
Sometimes it takes me a full week to screen. It depends upon other people returning my phone calls. I don't have any control over that.
If you have a pay stub, it means you had a job last week. It does not mean you have a job this week.
It's not impossible for an employee to get a pink slip in their pay envelope. So that on Friday, you had a job and a pay slip, but on Saturday you are unemployed.
I am asking you boss other things besides how much you make. None of that information will be on your pay slip.

How old are you and are you new to renting??
You do make a good point and I would not want to live around rif raf either and would hope he does a credit checks. I just thought the requirements were less for cheaper places. So of course if I;m trying to rent a place that is $1400 a month I would expect the requirements to be a lot different from renting a studio apt for half that price.
I;m not new to renting since I been living in this apt since 2000. To get this place I had to pay 4 months rent instead of 3 months because at the time I had bad credit after they did the check.

Why would someone be trying to move into a apt if they were just laid off

I had a friend that bought a $40k SUV, knowing he was going to quit later in the week. His rational was that he'd have difficulty getting financing if he didn't do it then.
Perhaps because their current LL wants them out, and they have to move somewhere? There are scam artists that go from property to property, leaving a trail of debt behind them. There are also those that have every intention of having a roommate/s live with them even though their lease forbids it. Etc.

because it can take months for an eviction to go thru and they live there rent free the whole time. Is it smart? Nope. Is it right? Nope. Is it done? Yup, all the time.
What you're not understanding is that is doesn't matter how much your rent is, if your landlord is a decent one, he's going to do a complete background check on you. Credit, criminal, work history, past landlords, etc.
