I moved out recently and the LL sid that they might need to replace this counter-top. I got my apt. cleaned, n they probably didnt want to use harsh chemicals on it. But the stains are not burn marks, it's the rust from the cast iron. I have lived there for 5yrs.

I am attaching a pic. Pls suggest , under MN law.

Thanks

Are you really saying that you knew the counter top wasn't cleaned,
that it had damage of some sort more than a common cleaning would deal with...
and yet you never discussed this with the LL before leaving?

The good news is the landlord only said he "might" have to charge you for a new countertop. This says to me, he will try to clean it/bleach it first.

The bad news is, if he can't, I don't see this as normal wear and tear. So, yes, I think it would be reasonable for the LL to charge you for it.

I don't think putting cast iron on the countertop is a good idea, obviously. That's what hot pads are for. My mama taught me about hot pads at a very young age.

Unfortunately, small areas of counter top can't be repaired and the whole thing has to be replaced. You damaged it, so you get to pay for it.

Are those burns? Did you set a hot pan directly onto the laminate?

The landlord might be able to get the stains out, but if it is rust, or charring from a hot pan, it is possible that it can't be cleaned and must be replaced.

It would have been cheaper for you to have purchased and used a couple of trivets or even a couple of ceramic tiles to set your pots on.

If the stains don't come out, yeah, it's reasonable to charge you for the damage/stains. (I can't tell from the pic what the counter is made of, so it's hard to make a guess on how likely they are to lift out with proper cleaning and treatment.)

I'm curious, how did you get rust stains on the counter?
