Maybe where you are 1k is 'high rent', but that's nothing around here...that's average rent. Average. Not much to find below that unless you're deep in the ghetto.

So what area are you in? manhanttan?

What to know what I'm stunned by? Your ignorance. I don't mean that in a snarky way, but it concerns me that a grown adult can't understand a simple contract.

You're not going to get rewarded for paying your rent on time, that's what you agreed to do when you signed the lease. You also agreed to live in the unit for x amount of months, paying x amount of dollars, according to the terms of the lease. If you leave before the term is up, you will have to pay a penalty for doing so. You also agreed to this when you signed the lease.

This was first time in this situation and that's why I called to ask. But now that I am out of non-profit I don't expect to go through this no time soon.

No, I don't live in New York. As my name suggests, I live in Florida. Well, I live here part time anyway.

You know what I'm stunned by?
People that think there is no flexibility in life and that every LL (and other person in the world) should adhere to the strict agreement made and never make allowances.
It would be an awful world if that was true.
There's an old saying about the best laid plans of mice and men and very responsible people have been floored by that.....especially with the employment situation the last few years.
.
The jerks are the ones that stay and stay without paying until you have to evict them. Most decent people would work with a long term tenant that gave them as much notice as possible of an upcoming hardship.

Do they have to? No, of course not, but many would try to work something out with you.
It's a few , like the hardnoses on here that think only in black and white.
WestPhillyDude.....stop arguing with them and defending yourself, fercrissake.....you'll get nowhere.

Oh please. Don't assume you know the entire story. Read the entire thread and a few more of westphillys, starting around april, and maybe you'll figure out that all is not what it appears to be. Assumers, you know what they say about assumers.

You're right, however when a tenant 'expects' these things, that's where the issue is.

It's not "Wow my landlord is awesome and let me out of my lease without a fee!!" It's.." I can't pay the rent and I won't pay the fee because it's not my fault I don't have money and the landlord needs to bow to my needs"
