I have rented a home in San Marcos, CA for a almost 4 years, renewing every 6 months. We were given a 6 month lease in which we signed that was rejected by the homeowner. The rental company informed us that the owners wished to raise the rent and extend the contract to 9 months. We did not agree to the new contract do to the fact that I would be leaving in January back east to help out family and were given a 30 day notice to vacate. They scheduled showings for the house and cancelled them in less than a week because the found a new tenant for the property. We cleaned up turned over the keys and cleared the property 11 days before the 30th day. Can they still charge us for a new months of rent since we left early?

Yes you are responsible to pay to the last day of your notice. Leaving early is inconsequential to the rent being paid. The LL can refund you a portion of the rent of the new tenant moved in earlier than his move in date and paid for those early move in days ( overlapping the days you paid because the LL cannot double charge )
