Hello,

Tyler Perry helped my family back in April of 2014 on account of the fact that the rent office would no longer accept any more rent payments from me due to our being late constantly. This took place upon on return from my youngest son's Make-A-Wish sponsored trip to fullfill his wish. We were told to move at that moment and having not been prepared for this I went to the media to share our story with the hopes it would get the rent office to take our monies. Tyler Perry saw the story aired on TV and reached out to the news media to help us. He offered to pay our rent up until the end of our lease which is up on December 4th. Ever since then, we had been harassed by the property manager, were told that our lease would not be renewed. This apartment complex is considered a second chance complex and this is our 2nd year living here. My question is that I feel she will make it hard for us to apply for anything else by giving us a bad reference when they are called to confirm rental history. Are there any suggestions or advice? Our lease is upon December 4th 2014.

Thanks in advance,

Stressed out in Stockbridge

There is no obligation for management to renew your lease once it expires and they've made it clear that they don't plan on doing so, so your only option is to find somewhere else to live. If you got behind on rent payments to the point of facing eviction then likely they won't give you a good reference so best advice is to look for a private landlord rather than a corporate entity. Private landlords tend to be less strict about background checks. Find something within your means that you can afford and that way you can work to keep up with rent payments and not get into that late situation again.

If your rent has been paid for the last several months through Perry's generosity then you've been able to put money aside for the next place so moving costs and deposits, etc. shouldn't be a burden. Good luck!

There isn't much you can do. Don't lie on your application to your new place and hope they don't call your current LL for a reference. Next time, try to make payments on time and live somewhere where you know you can afford the rent every month (not saying you didn't do that this time, I know there are unforeseen circumstances sometimes).
