Background: I live in a very cheap apartment that does not require a credit check. Many of the people who move in here come from off the streets so they are very appreciative and don't want to do anything to jeopardize their new situation. So when I refused to do what they wanted and instead did they what I felt was right, they started harassing, discriminating, breaching covenant, defaming and making the roach situation in my apt. unlivable. Long story short, the tenant upstairs had 3 kids(6, 7 and * grade) the on-sights did not like them for some reason. The fridge broke so the single mom found a new one on craigslist and went to pick it up while the kids were home alone. They were up there for 30 minutes before the "on-sights" called the police for child endangerment and they wanted me to confirm their story. I didn't, I told the police the kids could stay with me until mom returns and they don't need to go talk to CPS.
Please let me know if I have any legal ground for the following or recommendations. The "on-sights" think they can say and do whatever the want and get away with it. Honestly they aren't even part of the company, they tell everyone they are. They clean up and get rent knocked off.
Discrimination: My boyfriend came to stay a few days with me and one day his uncle was coming over to pick up some hand me downs. As my boyfriend went out with his arms full of clothes, the gate slammed behind and the male on-sight yelled out his window to stop slamming the f"""ing gate. My boyfriend went to talk to him because he honestly didn't mean to slam it but at the same time wasn't going to allow him to yell at him like that. The on-sight started saying that he has to be selling drugs because all black guys sell drugs and that the black guy in the car was his supplier. After that, they followed him around with their cell phones, would hell out the window for everyone to look at the drug deal going on out the window. If any black person came they would say oh you must be here to pick up drugs. His apartment is right over there.
Harassment: When I first moved in I was helping people out with their taxes so I had people coming in and out, maybe 2 or 3 every couple of days. One day I was sitting outside and the on-site told me that an escort used to live in the complex but they got rid of her because they don't agree with the type of behavior. Then he said but in the meantime, you should make money however you can to make rent. When I was hanging up clothes he would walk by and say look honey, they ***** is hanging up her clothes. Lastly, my best friend came to stay after the death of a parent and while we were sitting outside, a 1st grader came to us and asked if we were partners because he heard the on-sight and his mommy saying we are partners and sleeping together
If you "live in a very cheap apartment that does not require a credit check" there's a much slimmer chance of having good neighbors than there is if you live in an upscale penthouse.
You are dealing with run of the mill less than desirable apartment living and nothing that's going on is cause for litigation. If someone harassed your boyfriend, he should have called the police. You'll find your state landlord tenant laws linked in the first "sticky" on this forum and if your landlord is failing in his responsibilities there are steps you can take for relief. Sounds as though you started off on a bit of the wrong foot by making demands.
Start saving, get a second job - whatever it takes - so you can move to a better place. Good luck.
Well, they shouldn't be doing what they're doing, but you aren't exactly staying in the Hilton so it might be difficult to avoid these annoying behaviors. I agree with everyone else, just move to a better place if possible.
You gets what you pays for. (PS - it took me awhile, but I think what you mean by "on sights" is the on-site managers, right?)
