Hello there guys.. sorry if this is the wrong section. I signed a receipt for move in costs three weeks ago for 1115 and 850 rental rate. I move in tomorrow and the lady called me for a reminder and all of a sudden it will be 1170 move in cost and 890 rental rate. Can they do this even though we agreed on a price? Seems a bit shady. Thank you for any help.
I'm a retired property manager in CA. If your receipt says the terms of your lease, and it looks like it does, then that's a legal document of the terms you agreed on. When you say "receipt" does that mean you paid them and they accepted your money? Double done deal then. You have a written legal document you can take to court. Doesn't matter if it's a fancy lease with any other terms.
The only way they can maybe "get you" is if the receipt doesn't say it's for a year lease, or mentions the duration of the lease. In that case, they could claim that your agreement is month-to-month, and then they could give you a 30 day notice for a higher rent.
You could use this to your advantage, too, though. Tell them your receipt is a binding written contract, and if they want to push these different terms, you'd be willing to take it to court and ask the judge if it would be considered a "bait and switch," which is illegal. Bluff for a bluff. Then tell them you're happy to sign a year lease with the original terms, though, and consider this a misunderstanding or simple error on the part of whoever filled in this new form, etc.
I haven't paid them yet but it was a receipt for move in costs and monthly rental rate and it says 12 month lease on it. It is not the lease though. I can send you a screenshot through PM if you want NoMoSnow. Thanks.

If you have a "receipt" clearly stating the amounts which will be due then call the agent/landlord and ask why there's such a discrepancy. It may well be a simple error. Just call.

I did and she said it "must" be a mistake on the paper. Sounds shady.

Then call her back and tell her that you relied on the "receipt" she gave you and aren't prepared to pay any more than what was agreed upon. Good luck!
I really wish you'd clarify what you mean by "receipt" or whether you signed a lease. What does it say at the top of the paper? Does it say receipt for money's paid? That's what a receipt is - it says I received $x from person, signed by person who is in "receipt" of that money!
It's important to understand the meaning of the words you use - because there often are legal definitions and those words can mean other things to a judge than they do to you.
Not a receipt. That is a move in reservation form.
