My fiance and I have been renting at this dive apartment complex since last august. On my income plus my fiance's we bring in about six times more than the montly rent. Like I said the place was a dive but it's dirt cheap and we have an extrodinary amount of medical bills to pay.

The complex is being purchased by a local development group using a federal grant of some kind. The deal was announced as a potential a week after we moved in last year, the developer showed up and handed out information (on lead paint). The deal has apparently gone through, and next month we make our checks out to the new developer.

From the start I've been leery of the developer, they actively dodged questions I asked them over and over again. The deal has gone through now, and they are asking for print outs of our last six months bank statements. If this were a potential lanlord, and not an inherited one, this would be a red flag for me to stay away.

I've read up on the laws, and they have to store my information for three years. I do not trust this person with my bank statements for one minute, let alone three years. Do I have the right to refuse their request?

What was their reason for asking for such info?

No specific reason is given other than they take over the property starting tomorrow. "I am enclosing an Applicant/Tenant questionaire for each resident over the age of 18..." "...if you indicate yes you have a checking or saving account, I will need copies of your statements for the last six months on each checking and savings account" is what it said in the letter reads.

I don't see as why you'd be obliged to even give this information out whatsoever unless your lease says so.

Politely decline. They cannot legally enforce such a demand.

^^Agreed.

I suspect that one of the new "how to be a LL" books is telling noobs to do this
as the topic seems to be coming up more and more recently

Not their business, ask them to provide the same information from their company they are requesting from you!

Indeed it is none of their business and tell them you want to see their bank statements . Tell them your BIL is a lawyer and he advised me to do the same of you. guaranteed they will back off and they know you mean business . Good luck to you , hard enough to find a place to live much less being hassled.

I agree with others. They would have "inherited" your original application and credit file from the previous owners. No need to qualify again for something you already have taken possession of.

I would politely ask for further details as to why.

Just a thought he could be asking it cause he wants to raise the rent in the future on you. And if he can see you still make way more than enough money to afford the rent he could end up making you pay more. Don't give him anything whatsoever!
