I'll call right now, thanks! Who do I call to talk to though, and what do I even ask? Considering I'm calling on someone else's behalf, can they even do anything?

The job prospect called her old job and asked was she eligible to be rehired. When they said no, she lost her chance. That's the legal way employers find out stuff, not the particulars but enough.

that question is the one that always seals the deal. When I call references we'll chat a bit about the employee and then I throw that question out and their response says it all.

I had one guy go on and on about wonderful this person was, how nice they were, how hard they worked etc. Then I asked "If they came in today and asked you for their job back, what would you say?" He was silent for about 15 seconds and said "I'm not comfortable answering that question". Her app went straight to the trash.

OP, you already know your MIL isn't going to change, isn't going to do anything to improve her situation so you have a choice to make. Are you going to let them move in or let them flounder? They can get help and you can point them to the help, but you can't force them to take it.

Good luck, you're in a tight spot

FYI, if they really do wait until the sheriff moves them out, that will mean they also have an eviction on their public record. The sheriff will only do that once the new owner (whether that is the bank or an investor or whoever) has filed in court and received an unlawful detainer, and paid thousands of dollars for the sheriff to show up and evict.

You think it is hard to find a place to rent when you have bad credit and no income, try renting when you've been evicted. I don't think even the subsidized housing programs will accept you then.

They haven't received their redemption period notice yet (where they have 6 months to catch back up) but if they move out even 1 day before the 6 months are up, is that still an eviction? I'll try to convince them to leave before. They are broke and living for free, plus they love their house. It's a sad deal.

A little update. In laws still haven't received their 6 month notice, so they still have a minimum of 6 months even if they receive the notice Monday. They haven't paid their mortgage or property taxes since July 2014. I'm "happy" for them to have a place to live, but I wonder when they will be booted. They have no jobs and nothing lined up. I've tried for months to help, but they refuse all efforts. Father in law is oblivious and mother in law cries like a baby at the first sign of foreclosure talk.

I am wondering if they can stretch it to 3 years. I'm hoping my mother in law gets a job so they can maybe qualify for a studio apartment. Their earliest foreclosure date is in June 2016. Looks like it could easily be 2017 before they're gone. Insane that any bank would just let them stay there. They're not keeping the place up at all because they no longer have pride since it's not theirs. It's sad.

If she gets a crap job can they combine her income with his disability? They need a place to live but are very racist and opposed to section 8. Really tough to deal with here.

Next month will be 2 years without paying their mortgage, and they still haven't received their 6 month redemption period notice yet. Is it possible they have slipped thru the cracks and will be able to stay in definitely? They've also stopped paying their property tax, so I wonder if the state will notify the lender and get this foreclose moving again. I am now buying them food on a regular basis. Mil always has cigs and booze, but last week they had NO food, and no gas in their vehicle. I won't give them cash, I physically buy them food. If I gave them $200, my Mil would buy a carton of cigs before buying bread. **** is depressing...

Can you afford to pay the Taxes? IF you could I suggest you do it rather than they become homeless & move in with you. BTW Thanks for the update.

Paying their taxes is the least of their worries. Even if I did that, they're $40,800 behind on their mortgage. It's a matter of when, not if.

Any realtors in here ever seen a foreclosure take this long? It's amazing to me.

I just happened to see this thread, but have not read the whole thing. Seriously, what would happen if you did not buy food? Would they starve rather than give up cigarettes and booze? It sounds like a terrible situation. I am so sorry for you and your spouse.

But darn it, I feel like a real chump for scrimping/working extra jobs/forgoing luxuries over the years so that our mortgage & taxes were always paid in full and on time (except for one time) when some people are going years without doing that. It is hard to believe that they haven't paid the mortgage & taxes in two years and no one has noticed. Last year my mortgage check got delayed in the mail and even before the 15 day grace period was up I received two phone calls from the bank asking for the money.
