There is a wait to get a Section 8 voucher and once the tenant has one, there is an additional problem of finding a landlord who will accept it.
Many landlords refuse to participate in the program and, let's face it, OP, your MIL might possibly not be the very best choice in available tenants.
At one time most of the units I managed were Section 8/Voucher...
I'm down to one last legacy Section 8 tenant... the program has changed so much as to make it no longer worth while...
When I started... the idea is Section 8 would partner with local landlords to provide decent housing to low income families... the partner concept is long gone and so are most of the small to medium landlords I know.
Are there other programs besides section 8? It seems like there are way more people in need than there are housing options.
I feel bad for people like freemkt on here who seem to be victims of the system, as well as bad luck. My in laws did this to themselves, but what kind of world is it where someone can just be allowed to be homeless, and basically swept under the rug. I don't know, I just feel like there must be a solution. When you have people like my Mil who wants to be taken care of on the government dime, it angers a lot of folks. But there seem to be a lot of real good hard working folks like freemkt who can't get even one break. Sometimes all you need is a glimmer of hope.
With all due respect, the moment you start using freemkt as an example of the downtrodden "good hard working folks" victim sector, you seriously lose all crediibility.
Yes there are other options... many are faith based.
I know Mormons look after their own as do Lutherans... there are Lutheran and Catholic retirement communities near my work and know a few that would have been on the street had these groups not provided a lifeline.
I know a frail elderly woman that had no family... she had outlived everyone... she lives in a State run nursing home and is bedridden... this option is the option of last resort.
There are a lot of people who need help. They may be lazy and entitled like my mil, but they also may truly be needy due to medical conditions or other circumstances like my fil. It seems like there's not enough affordable housing anywhere. I live in a pretty affordable area for houses, but rent is really high.
Some will have work related Worker's Comp... others qualify for early Social Security.
If low Income there are more programs that I have time to type here in my city.. everything from meal programs, discounted utilities, free cell phones, taxi vouchers, county paid medical insurance, etc.
Yes! Called Safelink to qulify for cell phone & 120 Free mins a month you need to be on SNAP [Food Stamps] or be on another gov program. Only 1 per house hold no matter how many people live there related or not.
