All the tenants in the 5 unit building I live in received a letter stating the property manager was no longer employed by the landlord. The reason wasn't stated but its assumed that he was stealing the rent he collected. In December he told us the landlord was changing the business name so the money orders/checks needed to be converted to cash. We did so. Every time the rent was paid he'd ask the same thing. Now were concerned that we the tenants are going to have to repay 6 month's worth of rent we've already paid. Any ideas? Thanks.

Assume nothing. You've been advised of his departure and that's all. NEVER accept any changes to the method or amount of your rent payment unless officially stated in writing by the landlord.
PM has the legal authority to change the method of payment in most cases, specific circumstances may be different however. You should have some kind of record of the payments made and are covered that way. If you don't have records, check copies or receipts, you could potentially be in trouble.

The PM can change the method of payment but only in writing and with the consent of the LL. IF the PM was dismissed for illegally diverting the rent payments it's highly unlikely the tenants will be in any trouble. The landlord will seek redress from the PM.

They can't go after you for what someone else has stolen. If he was stealing, criminal charges will be filed and they will go after him.
