I pay $1,200 for a small one bedroom 600 sq ft apartment in the not so nice area of San Jose, CA. And it is not cute, with brick or anything fun like that, it is off of a busy road that has fire engines & ambulances constantly going by. The other week the police had a shoot out with some guys they pulled over off the freeway right infront of my apartment complex and then they cornered 2 of them in the lovely trailer prak just up the street for about half a day until they finally caught them. In short, the Bay Area sucks.
We're actually paying less now for a house (rental) on a half acre lot than we were for a tiny condo with no yard. But the only catch is....we pay water and trash now so its really not much of a savings. Rent up here in the H D is almost comparable to some areas of where I used to live in Az, really, and more affordable than 'down the hill', thats for sure. $1,000 month will get you a 1 bedroom apt 'down there'. We've looked for months until we finally gave up and just took a house up here.
Generally, the cost of living matches wages in many areas (most of the time).
$1000/mo. for a 2 bedroom, 1500 sq. ft townhome in the Salt Lake City area. It has an attached garage, is new construction, utilities paid, yard work/snow removal taken included. Plus, I love the area, in the foothills of the mountains with great views. I think we are getting a great deal - checking around most other places cost about the same in this area to live in stacked flats, no garage or yard, etc.
I'm in a Rent to Own situation, we pay 730 per month and at the end of three years we get all that back as the Down Payment on a pre-arranged 119,000 dollar sale. The price is Today's market Plus three years of Real Estate Taxes.
We will have a 26,000 dollar down payment ready to go. It's a nice deal. The owner had the place on the market for a while but in a slow economy, it's a good way to sell a house. Very little risk to the owner as if we opt to leave, he gets to keep the money. If we buy, he's sold a house. There are a few others doing the same program via this Real Estate owner.
