In the state of California, can a landlord require you to clean carpet upon move out for normal wear and tear? A landlord of my friends(he's Asian, the landlord) is saying if they don't get the carpet cleaned then he will have to have someone come in and clean it and it will be more expensive. Her deposit is $1100 and he's saying it would cost him that to get it cleaned. Are they being scammed or does his case hold water?

What does the landlord being "Asian" have to do with anything?
