As already said, they cannot raise your rent in the middle of the lease. They can however, raise your utilities mid lease.

You can talk to the manger in regards to their notice, but the bottom is this: You need to make plans now to either move, or cough up more dough. Rents are going up all over the country and it doesn't matter what part of town you live in...rents are going up. So even if they agree to a lessor increase, you're going to have to come up with more money and you'll have to decide is this unit really worth the money. I'd say no; who wants to live where their car gets broken into, you get robbed in your parking lot and your own manager tells you the area is sketchy?

You can also ask about moving to another one of their properties, but you'll be considered a 'transfer' and wont' be eligible for any new tenant discounts. It might be better to find another complex or private landlord.

Talk to them today and post an update. That increase amount is crazy and while I dont' have an issue with rental increases...100% is a bit much.

If you lease end date is October 2015, the rent cannot be raised until then. Per state law.

In the mean time, focus on moving, as you suggested. Sounds like rents have increased too much in your area, making it unaffordable for your family. Besides, it's unsafe.

The parking and Water , sewer ,garbage has already undergone the double raise the reviewer was talking about . that was a 30 day notice, we all got that note too . I just didn;t realize he'd also had 2 rent increases in 2 years .
Ours is a 10 month lease , it was WAYYYY higher with a 6 , 11 or 12 month lease and certainly month to month . We had to take the cheapest month .

This is supposedly part of a safety thing like the poster here is talking about. They even sent out notes to all of us warning us that keeping safe is our own responsibility and only walk in groups here and preferably not at all after dark . lol jeez . I have rented for decades and have never seen an "every man for themselves" letter before now .

Its gotten really bad, both our cars have been broken into several times and we were robbed on a rainy Saturday night when were coming home from a concert late by a homeless person back in the first part of May . Thank God we only had 10.00 in cash on us , this dude was incredibly dope sick . I hate to talk this way , its embarrassing . Husbands job is in Everett , is why we are right here . He has an opportunity to go to Portland if he would like to . We have lived there to in the past.
I feel for you. Hate that area. I am near Mukilteo and our teens probably both go to the same HS (unless you are on east casino, less infamous).

Anyway, I agree with the rest. Your rent can only be raised at the end of the lease so talk to management to clarify. I would move if I were you. If your husband works in Everett there are some nice apartments near Forest park/Hardeson rd area which are still in the same HS area.

Hope it works out.

If you have a lease that says you will pay $500 a month rent till December, then they CANNOT raise your rent in the middle of it before December.

when an apartment ADVERTISES its rates, yes they can adjust the rates in the ads, for new people.

I have never heard of a rent being raised 100% that's ridiculous.

so that means you may be paying $500 now and in December it will be $1,000? sheesh!!!

Ok I was so tired last night and worried when I posted I just could NOT go on .

It is going to cost me so much to get out of this ,, you know the usual 2 months plus the one I owe TODAY that I am going to go to the office to TRY to see if they can transfer me to another property or if they can negotiate . I swear if I had the 3 rents it would take to leave today I would . Last daughter is going into high school and there's going to be a load of people from other middle schools she doesn't know anyway. Would like to get the money together if possible before she has to go back in Sept . If nothing comes of this I am going to use that link Corn-fused posted to see if I can get any help with this situation . I saw a few more reviews stating the same thing I am regarding the rent raising .

Yes- you have it right .

except its about 2 1/2 times that for a 900 sq ft in a VERY bad neighborhood . This is close to my husbands work and we didn't know the area when we were sent here. Husband is an aviation contractor so he has an agent but they don't pay moving costs. The contract ended at our last assignment in Portland and didn't have alot of time to pick and choose but for the longest we have lived in peace here . Its just finally become too high even for an aviation mechanic and I am a licensed galloper for several tracks here in the PNW . Which is my usual occupation . Like another poster said we are going to have to move way away from his work , Seattle's rents have become notoriously high and the city is growing in this direction . Oddly this is one of the cheaper ones in this particular area .. but its close to all the major aviation industries .

Yes I am practically on the other side of Boeing's fence, although he repairs currently flying aircraft for someone else over here . We are almost THE last complex on the west end of old raggedy Casino . You know how it is . Impossible to really describe unless you have been here.

NO it is absolutely not worth the money anymore ,,, these notes come out when the management or neighboring complexes have lost control and its covered with pics of clip art burglars and sometimes even gives you a list of places to look if your car is just all together stolen LOL its crazy . I mean these warning letters are so off the hook you have to TRY to keep your sense of humor . They are quite serious but to advertise that you are living here at your own risk with no option to leave without breaking your lease is crazy . Fortunately our family looks quite alternative and that seems to keep most folks away from us here but you never know , like the dopesick guy. My old Camaro that I loved was finally parted out enough as I slept that I had to sell it and get a new car that I could lock down like a fortress. So they aren't joking . As we speak someone desperatley wants under the hood of my Mitsubishi Spyder . Loose but they can't quite get it and its under the motion activated light.

I sympathize. Lived there twice but was first complex on west by Freddies. So much crime and weird people. Plus the managers were all crooks too. Have you looked into renting a house. Here in Mukilteo there are some really nice ones for probably what you are paying now for the apt or less.

It still isn't clear in your post as to whether you are talking about moving after your lease is up (and the rent increase takes effect) or trying to break the lease to move sooner?

Maybe you can take out a small loan to help with the move? I think the last time we lived there we skipped out on the lease and they never came after us. We left because someone blew up our car (yes literally) and there was a stabbing a few buildings down from us.

WA law states you can't break a lease because it's an unsafe neighborhood, but most landlords/managers should be sympathetic as was the manager in our case.

Id like to leave now I just don't have the money to pay the rent today and the 2 more months rent (penalty rent and last months ) to go now . I would LOVE to leave in the next 30 minutes. That would be looking at $6000 . No way can I get a loan for that .

THEN I would have to get together a deposit and 1st months on something else.. I think its the enormity of it I have gone through 2 rent increases here already and this last one is making it the 100% ( just to clarify).

I just finally have come to the point that I don't have that much money and they have been very slow where he works now and they arent getting a full 40 so I need to figure out a way to ride this last few months out if I cannot fix this . I agree it is illegal but I also think you and Corn-fused are right about the managers being crooked as hell. My neighbor who recently left is paying off a 750.00 bill for a red lipstick spot the size of a silver dollar ( I saw it ) and they changed out his whole carpet and he'd been here 5 years . Same carpet whole time. He bought a house owner financed so the 750.00 he is paying off doesn't interfere with his having to rent something else .
We move around due to work so buying isnt practical for us . I totally believe your blown up car , someone is always getting shot here and wanted posters are always posted on the buildings here now as well .

Well if you had a stalker then WA state law says you can move by breaking the lease without penalty... LOL

If you find a place to rent now without paying for July rent then just move out, they could (and probably would) sue you for abandonment (not sure the technical term) but at least it wouldn't be an eviction on your record... right? I don't know if that would work either but sounds like you are in a no win situation.

You don't have to pay the penalty and additional rent right away, so maybe you could save funds to move then worry about the fees later? At the very least, you should start saving now and contact a couple places that are in a better area to see. There might also be other resources if you are in a financial hardship or have excellent credit.
