Lets say for instance i locked myself out. And i have a spare key hidden in a potted plant in the lobby of my apartment complex. Is that allowed legally? Is there any legal prescient about something like this?

Read your lease. If nothing is mentioned about it, you can hide a key. People do it all the time.

Only problem with that is if it's in a public place, how can you be sure that it will still be there?

Rather than leave it in a public place, I'd give an extra to a trusted friend. Who knows who might see you hide your key.

its not a public place. its within the building walls and the only way you can get into the building is if you already have a key, or are buzzed into the lobby with the front door security system.

Until the plants are changed or the cleaning lady finds the key and tosses it.

Sooo there's no point in hiding a key if you don't have the "lost" keys to enter your building to get to the hidden key.

Why not just keep an extra key in your car or your desk at work.

You can purchase a little key safe that bolts to the wall. It has a combination lock. That way you can have your key where you can get to it, but no one else can access it without the combination.

Perfect solution.

Don't hide your key in a public area because it will be found and it will be discarded. If you can't or don't want to use the key safe, have a friend or neighbor hold an extra key.

You can also get those locks that hang on your doorknob...they're ugly, but they work.
