I attempted to search the archives for a similar question, as I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't seem to find the right wording to bring up any relevant results.

I'm about to apply for an apartment but it would be nice to talk to the current tenant to learn about various quirks of the unit that only they would be aware of. Is it appropriate for me to ask for their contact info?

You can ask, but they don't have to give you that information. If I was a tenant I would be irritated if my landlord gave out my contact information to potential tenants UNLESS s/he had my permission to do so.

If you really, really want to talk to the tenant and are willing to be a little creepy knock on the door some evening.

You have their contact info - it's called their address. Send them a letter.

It would be a major violation of privacy for a landlord to give out contact information. If you asked me for something like that I would send you a denial letter, sketchy people doing sketchy things.

Yes! I would also be weirded out by someone ringing my doorbell to ask me in person about my unit. Honestly, I might also wonder if the person asking was a mole for the landlord or something. Maybe I'm just too suspicious.

No management company I have ever rented from would do this.
Not only could it result in putting them in hot water legally, but it wouldn't exactly breed trust between them and their tenants.

Make your decision based on seeing the apartment, amenities etc. Contacting the current tenant is out of line.

I agree with Kona, make your own decision and leave the current tenant alone. Asking for that info is out of line and knocking on their door is down right creepy.
