They re-keyed her locks today. The management company said they wouldn't penalize her if she broke her lease and moved out. They also found the laptop and xbox at a pawn shop close by. She doesn't live in the best area. She's only 21 and this is her first apartment. At least this has taught her a lesson. She's also looking into getting renters insurance through the same place that provides her car insurance.

Definately agree with the others about getting rental insurance. As far as changing the locks, I don't think I would trust maintenance to do it if there's a possibility it was them that came in.

Something like this would be a cheap help: Spy Cam Nanny Hidden Camera in Alarm Clock DVR Recorder Remote Control 640 480 | eBay It's a low end item probably not too appealing to a crook.

Good, she's had a cheap lesson (since she was able to get the laptop and Xbox back). Honestly, of all the reasons a renter should have renter's insurance, burglary's the least important one. What if the apartment complex caught fire and burned to the ground? What if a pipe above her unit broke and flooded her apartment? She could lose everything she owned (which could easily cost tens of thousands of dollars to replace).

And I agree with the others that getting a hidden nannycam or two would be a good idea as well, if she can afford them.
