Hello, I'm very new to this so I hope I'm doing this correctly. I'm newly engaged and wanting to relocate from New York to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia ( 3 bedroom, 2 bath). But we only want to deal with the owner of the property, not a real estate agent. The search agents aren't to helpful in that respect. So if anyone out there can help us it would be greatly appreciated for a family just starting out.

You'll need to look at FSBO properties (pronounced "fizbo". It means "For Sale By Owner". I, personally, would deal with a professional agent and negotiate the closing costs to be paid by the seller. You don't know the area, you need someone who does and can match you to your preferences. Visit any place you select at night or on weekends. An shady agent (yes, there are a couple) will not show you a place that has a million screaming children when school's out, for instance. Hampton Roads is a good area, but it has it's undesirable places too, just like everywhere else. Why not rent for a couple of months so you can see everything available?
