Well Look at it this way You can always move once you get to know the area.

So true. And once you're there, you get a resident preference, too, if you're applying for subsidized housing.

The first place I go is yelp and it usu steers me in the right direction. (although not all places are listed on yelp)

Decent places could still have a few neg reviews however. I found my last place through yelp - that place was like apartment heaven! I noticed there were a few negative reviews, but it was a huge complex, sooo...and it was people complaining about things that did not affect me, no place is perfect.

I agree that no place is perfect. I'm avoiding places where reviews mention mold. roaches, bedbugs, and poor response to maintenance issues. I ignore the reviews where people complain about not getting their deposit back or if they complain about the rules.

It's good to hear that you found a great place even though it had some negative reviews on yelp. That's encouraging.
