One of the reasons homebuyers pay for home inspections before making an offer is to ascertain the condition of the home and its component systems, in order to identify expected expenses and thereby prepare for them.

It's better to know that a house will need a new roof in about 12 years than in five years, as it is easier to budget that expense over 12 years than over five years.

I've rented and owned too, recognizing the perks of both, and the perks of owning still outweigh the perks of renting.

Should people be able to buy homes they can afford or should government prohibit the sale of homes which are affordable?
actually yes , someone locally should govern what is built . in our hoa in pa the minimum square footage in our development is 2800 sq ft including basement area .

the idea is you do not want a bungalow or hut built next to homes costing hundred's of thousands of dollars .

you want the number of homes controlled as well so you do not overload , sewer capacity , water capacity and electric capacity provided to the area . .

even other resources like roads ,schools and hospitals have to be considered before you start stuffing more little homes with more people in to an area .

The 11th commandment: Thou shalt not build a house under 2,800 square feet.

That depends entirely how which perks YOU value and which are most meaningful in YOUR personal situation AT THE CURRENT MOMENT IN TIME.

Considering whatever perks are valued by millions of Americans and which are most meaningful in their situation at the current moment in time, most still choose to be homeowners. That indicates that homeownership is still part of the "American Dream", renting is not; that's part of the Landlord's Dream™.

That is precisely what an HOA is for, it is not the proper purview of government, which should maintain a level playing field and not pick winners and losers.

Portland has a lot of people living in campers on the street, they have to keep moving the campers to avoid being hassled. Also a lot of RVs hidden or semi-hidden in lots and driveways.

Massive homeless sweep in progress, I expect to see more in my neighborhood shortly. A lot of them sleeping overnight in parks.
