Would you guys get mad if your landlord increases rent to fair market value after you have been living there for years paying several hundred under market value?

Let's say current market value is $1800 a month, and you have been paying $1425.

And a NEW landlord takes over and charges $1800.

BUT, you are getting housing assistance so it wouldn't affect you that much. Would you roll with it, or cry foul?

If someone's getting housing assistance, it wouldn't affect their rent, unless you raised the rent above what HUD allows for them. In that case, they'd have to pay another 10% of their income max - if the housing authority allowed them to pay the addition 10%. This would be allowed after they paid on time for 1 year. Plus, the landlord would still need approval from HUD for them to live there - and your rent would still have to meet their max allowed including tenant's rent and their subsidy.

So, what the real issue is here - is if the housing authority would approve of the increased rent you want as a landlord with a tenant with subsidized rent.

The bottom line is simple, if you cannot afford the increase, you move.

No reason to get mad at the landlord. You can scream, cry and pluck your feathers out, but either you accept the increase or you move

exactly my feelings too . i bet the op wouldn't want someone limiting their income at work from what they should earn as a market income . but it is okay to do it to others
we all want to earn the most the job market will allow for what we do , but when it comes to what landlords do they should take a pay cut ..

Don't get why you would be mad. It's really simple, ether stay or go. Not rocket science....

you see this in forums all the time folks where folks fail financially for whatever reason , so everyone else is supposed to take less than what their earning potential is because they failed . it defy's logic .

like they expect to be rewarded for failure and live in better places than they can afford .

nothing personal but it is what it is when renters expect landlords to take less pay because their own income is to low . .

exactly.

The OP is already paying little to no rent as it is and will continue to keep that low income in order keep that assistance coming. What does the OP want? Do they want the landlord to pay them for living there? Oops..my bad...we are already paying them to live there.

What's foul about it? You lucked out for years, & someone else is still paying part of your rent.

they should be saying thank you for all the years they lived somewhere they can't afford on their own rather than complain about someone in the real estate business wanting to earn a market income for what it is they or their money do to put food on the table and pay bills .

everyone wants to be rewarded for failing financially by taking it out of the pockets of those who were successful .
