My situation is very unique. I signed a lease with my boyfriend and 6 months later we broke up. He has been sleeping on the couch downstairs for 6 months but uses our master bedroom shower still. He is a severe alcholic and sleep walks when hes drunk (every night). I've caught him a couple of time sleepwalking into the bedroom and acting weird. He is also very verbally abusive and an all around bad guy. We dont have a door to the bathroom in our master bedroom and can see right into the bathroom whenever hes showering. I want to put a camera by my bed for my safety. I informed him of the camera to help deter him from doing anything weird, and he was very vocal about not giving consent and that it was illegal to do this. Is he right? I reminded him that he hasnt slept in the room for 6 months and we have a second bathroom he can use to shower in, but he is refusing and says he doesnt give consent and will sue me if do. I live in Colorado.. Im not sure what the laws are regarding privacy.

Wouldn't be easier to just move?

You don't need his consent to put up a camera or to lock your bedroom door.

Just know that is he's does go 'weird' and damages the unit in any way, you're going to be held responsible for it along with him. You should talk to your landlord about breaking your lease and getting out of this situation.

You lived together happily for six months, then broke up. For another six months he's been sleeping on the couch. That means your probable one year lease is long over. Are you on month to month now?

If he won't leave, you move. Find a room mate if you have to. How long do you expect this situation to continue ? Take control of it. Put a lock on your bedroom door.

We signed a two year lease because the market was about to go crazy and we wanted to make sure we were locked in at a low rate for longer. Such a huge mistake but I can't take it back now.

He tells me I have to find a roommate if I want to leave and he has to sign off on it. He's really controlling and I believe he won't sign off on one even if I find one. I think my best option is to talk to the landlord. I was hoping to avoid that at all costs. I'm not this girl that causes drama and I was hoping to find a way to live with it and not involve the landlord.

Whose name is on the lease?

If you're both on the lease, and you're coming to the end of the year, do not sign on for another year.

Leave.

Obviously this is a problem relationship, on many levels. Run. Don't walk. Run.

That's exactly what I plan to do but I would like to be safe in the meantime. I don't want to get sued for violating privacy laws for using a camera, but I honestly believe this is the only thing that will stop him from acting up until the lease is over.

How about a lock on the bedroom door? Followed quickly by getting your butt out of that apartment?

When, exactly, is the lease done?
