Does a typical renters insurance policy cover that much liability? If not approx how much might that cost? I saw a rental ad where proof of coverage is required. Would a personal umbrella policy on top of standard renters insurance be a better option?

This information is easily googled. And yes, $100k for liability for renter's ins is fairly standard.

Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America defines as $30,000 of property/contents coverage, and $100,000 of liability coverage – is about $145 per year.

I have $150,000 for $18 a month. Most of that is in case my dog bites some one.

Your best bet is calling your insurance agent and asking them. Before you do that, how much in total assets do you have approximately? What is your career earning potential based on your current education and occupation?

Umbrellas are more typical for higher earners and/or folks with significant assets to protect. The word "significant" is subjective and something you have to decide for yourself. Perhaps you could sit down with your agent and have an in depth discussion on your finances. The majority of a good agent's income comes from the financial side more so than the insurance side nowadays

I obtained renters insurance for around $12 a month. However, most policies DO NOT cover flood damage. That will need to be a separate policy.

No. A personal umbrella coverage kicks in after your regular insurance coverage limit is reached. It's additional insurance to your policy covering auto home personal . Hence umbrella. Also, with a umbrella policy your regular insurance coverages get kicked up. For example my car insurance I have to have. 250/500/250k minimum coverages now. I can't just do the minimum coverage. I can't even do a,liability only policy. Not that I would want to. All my vehicles are full coverage insured with high limits.

A typical 100,000k renters policy is 130-150 bucks a year. It's really cheap. And it covers your personal property and issues.

I just paid 115 a yr with State Farm 100k liability. I had my auto with them and received a small discount.
It took less than ten minutes on the phone after I fill out the online forum the day before.

It will be more or less depending on where you live. They will email you your proof of policy.

About $9/month and that includes actual replacement cost (not depreciated).
