Does anyone know a good site I can do a background check on someone I'm thinking of becoming a roommate with? They have a hundred sites out there and before I give someone any money I would like to know of a good site.

The roommate is a tenant and going to rent to you? In a rental he already has possession of?

You can go down to the courthouse and run his name and see if he has had criminal charges or evictions or lawsuits filed against him.

You can't run a credit report without his written permission, all of his information, and a place to run the credit report, at least two of which you probably don't have access to.

If the roommate owns the house, you can check with the county assessor to verify that he owns the house and whether or not taxes are paid up to date. If you want to pay for a title search, you can find out if there are any leins on the house.

Or, you could shell out the money for a private investigator. I've heard they can be spendy, though.

Are you currently living somewhere and are thinking of having this this person move in with you or are you thinking of moving in with this person who has a current apt or are both of you thinking of moving into a place together at the same time?

If you already have an apt and are thinking of having this person move in with you then 1) you need to first get it approved via your LL/management for them to move in and 2) if they are approved then most likely the LL ran background/credit check, etc on them. If you are not sure if they do that or not then make sure to ask your LL specifically to do so.

If you are thinking of moving in with someone who already has an apt then most likely they already qualified when they moved in and then only you would need to be screened by the LL and have a BG/credit check, etc done on you.

If you are both planning on moving into a new place together then both of you will go through the screening process individually done by the LL in order to qualify so you wouldn't have to worry about running any background/credit check on them yourself.

So, you should be covered unless I am missing what you are asking.

Start with the company where they work.
Big time big employers (hospital, government, etc) will have done background checks.
If they're good enough to pass muster with XYZ...

As regards housemates focus in the getting along end of things first.

They have to sign an authorization to permit you to do a background check.

No they don't. You can do a background check through publicly available records and or interviewing people who know the person. No permission is required to do any of that.

If you want information that is not available to the public then you would need an authorization from the person allowing you to have access to the information.

You've been told what you can do. There is no site where you can do a background check unless you are a paying client of that site and you can't sign up with any of those sites unless you are a qualified business owner. They are not available to curious members of the general public who basically just want to snoop.

You've got a legitimate reason to want the infirmation, so you could become a customer of one of those sites, pay their fees, get through their inspection, meet their requirements, pass their background check on you while they verify you are legit. That's a lot of trouble and expense to check on one roommate.

They all get their information from the same place.

Here's a list. Pick one.
