And OP, you could just knock on people's doors and ask them if they're bothered by noise overhead. It wouldn't hurt and you might get some decent answers. Better than trusting to the unknown.
True.

It's also possible that this forum has made me paranoid bc I can count on one hand how many people irl have complained about the things that are complained about here. Maybe people here are more annoyed?

One of the issues we've discovered in our most recent, upscale condo (with concrete slab floors, breezeways and balconies) is ... it is difficult to tell where the noise is coming from. In our prior two condos, we never heard any noise, but, here, it sounds like people in high heels are walking around upstairs at all hours of the night (6th/5th floors). However, we've pretty much determined that the noise isn't coming from there.

The other day, I could have sworn that somebody upstairs was bouncing a tennis ball off the wall. Later, I discovered the noise was workers dropping removed pavers onto a pallet ... 5 floors below!
Otherwise, we seem pretty much insulated and sound-proofed, but, apparently, the concrete slab construction of our condo (69-units) carries some sounds quite well.

I prefer upstairs (the stairwell is great for hanging storage)... but we have children. I’d never willingly subject someone to living underneath children.

Most homes are owned by local Owners and far Cheaper that Apts or Townhouses. You deal Directly with the Owners Not some big corp that only sees $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I'm only one person. I guarantee that I can't get a home for less than an apt. The apts are $750-1000. Homes are $1200+

1 bedroom APT $750 2 bedroom townhouse 1200 Older 2 bedroom house $500 New 1250^

We were offered a older home 2 bedrooms 1/2 acre lot $450. Fantastic condition ... only drawback was Not Handicap ... all fenced for my Service dog.

Guess the price depends on the area you live in.

They are closer to $1500 where I live now (NYC metro), I'm moving upstate to save money. It's too expensive here.

You live in West Virginia, I live in NY. You can't even rent a closet for $450 here.

Several years ago we lived in a new construction (i.e., cheaply built) first floor apartment. A woman in her 50s lived above us. Never heard her walking around, but every afternoon about 3 p.m. her two Shih-zhus would jump off the couch and run around for a couple minutes which we could clearly hear.
