Back story, a few months ago, my husband caused a grease fire. It messed up the carpets, the upper part of the kitchen hood is black, and one of the cabinets is ruined. He has called insurance about it but never followed up. Our deductible went up from $500 to $1000. Is it worth it to call insurance about it again or just let the apartment handle it? He thinks we should just pay for damages afterwards but I'm sure it'll be more than the deductible.

Are you sure they haven't contacted the property owner and are working something out? Sometimes that stuff will happen without you knowing.

Your deductible is immaterial, nor can you file the claim.

You need to contact your landlord, who will file the claim against your liability coverage.

If they did, I haven't heard anything about it.

This is going to be expensive to fix. You've already let your insurance company know it happened so there is no reason to not follow up and get them to pay.

If one of the cabinets is ruined, it might possibly be necessary to replace all the cabinets. It depends upon how difficult to match cabinets and how much the smoke smell soaked onto the other cabinets.

Carpet will have to be replaced and possibly in more than one room, depending upon whether or not there is a good stopping place.

It takes specialized cleaning to get smoke off the walls, possibly in several rooms.

Just call your insurance agent and ask ( politely) if you can get an update.

There was a grease fire a few months ago and you’re still living with the damage? Why? And how in the heck does your landlord not know that you had a fire in your unit?
