Our house closes June 3 and we are are moving to Philly. We'll rent for a year and then buy a place. It's 300 miles away so I plan to drive and stay two days to see what's available.

Should I drive there to look now or wait until May 1? From my renting days, I remember having 30 days to decide whether or not to renew a lease.

Now it is 60 days or at least it is in Florida.

Contact a local Realtor and find out how far in advance listings go on the market - and have them set up a rental search for you so you can see what’s out there. They should also be able to connect you with the large rental complexes too. Best of luck!

60 days is not uncommon for many complexes in the Midwest either. I have rented in FL, IN, and IL and most places I’ve lived required 60 days. It also seems that if you look a little earlier, you might get a better deal.

Most complexes in CA, and TX are also 60 day notifications.

Before you go, google for apartments in the area you are interested in. There is also several websites also dedicated to rentals. It will not only allow you to know what is available, and cost, but you can read the reviews for the rentals, which can give you an idea if it is even worth looking at a particular one. I have found in my searches, if you are looking at complexes, they keep their websites up to date on what is available, or coming available.
