So the owner is doing a 3-day temporary roof job. And he doesn't know when a permanent roof will be put on. Doesn't this make our leases null and void?? Thanks.

No. It doesn't. As long as the place can be lived in, your lease remains in effect. If there were NO roof, and he couldn't get a new one put on quickly, and the top floor units were open to the elements, that would be a different story.

No.

Are you on the top floor?

Were your belongings exposed?
Do you have a renter's insurance policy?
What state do you live in?

I can't think of any reason that it would cancel your lease.

Nice try, though.

If someone is hoping for for a way to get out from under their lease, keep looking. This isn't it.

All they need to do is read their lease regarding early termination and termite it early that way.

Well, we've had two (minor) fires lately in the elevator room. Our water is turned off almost every weak for hours so that they can "fix a leak" (this has been going on for two years). Our AC/heat doesn't work regularly. Since I worked in the legal field for 30 years, I know a case can be made that this place is falling apart.

Nice try, people.

And yet, you continue to live there. Why?

What part of the legal field are you in that you can’t afford a better apartment? Left field? Right field? Out field? It can’t be the ‘I’m doing well for myself field’ or you wouldn’t be living there.

Ahh, withholding material facts!!!!!! You asked about roof damage that was being repaired by the landlord, so the answers you received are proper for that single bit of information you provided. However, if you're now claiming you actually live in some ghetto slum run by a slumlord landlord and the place is in reality nothing but some sleaze hovel that should be condemned, that's a completely different scenario. Or did you not learn that in your 30 year career in "legal" services?
